Tory Lanez Faces Harsh Conditions in Supermax Prison

Tory Lanez, the Canadian rapper and singer convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, has been moved to a supermax prison in California, where he will face harsher conditions than his previous medium-security facility.

According to court reporter Meghann Cuniff, Lanez (real name: Daystar Peterson) was transferred to the California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi, California, on Tuesday. Since August, he has served his 10-year sentence at North Kern State Prison in Delano, California.

Cuniff explained on Twitter that Lanez was not placed in the general population at North Kern, as some reports had claimed, but was confined to “administrative segregation” due to his celebrity status. She said that Lanez had been living a “loner” existence at North Kern, where he had no access to the yard, the phone, or the canteen.

The California Correctional Institute is designated as a supermax prison, which houses some of the state’s most dangerous and violent offenders. Cuniff said that the “general population” there is not the same as elsewhere and that Lanez will likely face more restrictions and isolation than before.

Lanez’s legal team had previously pushed for him to be placed in the general population at North Kern, arguing that he deserved a “normal” prison experience where he could interact with other inmates. They also filed a second motion for bail on his behalf, pending the appeal of his conviction. However, Cuniff speculated that Lanez would not be granted bail since the motion is similar to the one rejected last month.

Lanez was convicted of three felony charges related to shooting Megan Thee Stallion (real name Megan Pete) in the foot after they left a party in Los Angeles in July 2020. A jury found him guilty of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Lanez has maintained his innocence and said he will continue to fight “till I come out victorious.”

Megan Thee Stallion, a three-time Grammy winner and one of the most popular female rappers in the industry, testified during the trial that Lanez shot her after an argument and yelled, “Dance, b***h” as she tried to walk away. She said she felt “shocked” and “hurt” and needed surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot. She also accused Lanez of waging “a campaign to humiliate and re-traumatize her” after the attack.
