Rapper J. Cole has shared a copy of a letter that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick wrote to the New York Jets, asking for an opportunity to join their practice squad after Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury.
Kaepernick, who has been out of the league since 2016, when he started kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality, said he was ready to help the Jets in any way he could.
“I am writing to you today to express my interest in joining your practice squad,” Kaepernick wrote in the letter, which J. Cole posted on his Instagram account on Tuesday. “I know this may seem like an unconventional request, but I believe I have something to offer your organization as a leader and a mentor.”
Kaepernick said he was impressed by the Jets’ decision to sign Rodgers, who he called “one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time,” in the offseason. He said he was saddened by Rodgers’ Achilles injury, which occurred in the first quarter of the Jets’ season opener against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.
“I can only imagine how devastating this must be for him and for your entire team,” Kaepernick wrote. “I have been in his shoes before, and I know how hard it is to recover from a major injury, both physically and mentally.”
Kaepernick said he had been training hard and staying in shape, hoping for another chance to play in the NFL. He said he would accept any role the Jets would offer him, even if it meant being on the scout team or holding a clipboard.
“I am not asking for a starting job or a guaranteed roster spot,” Kaepernick wrote. “I am simply asking for a chance to prove myself and to show you that I still have something left in the tank.”
Kaepernick said he understood his activism might make some people uncomfortable, but he hoped the Jets would look past that and judge him based on his football skills and character.
“I have always been a team player, and I have always put the interests of the team above my own,” Kaepernick wrote. “I have also always been a man of principle, and I have always stood up for what I believe in. I hope that you can respect that, even if you don’t agree with it.”
Kaepernick ended his letter by thanking the Jets for their consideration and expressing his admiration for their head coach, Robert Saleh, the first Muslim head coach in NFL history.
“I have followed your career closely, and I have been inspired by your leadership and your vision,” Kaepernick wrote. “I think you are building something special in New York, and I would love to be a part of it.”
