Nashawn Breedlove, the rapper and actor who played Lotto in the movie “8 Mile”, has passed away at the age of 46. His mother, Patricia Breedlove, confirmed his death on Facebook on Tuesday, saying that he died in his sleep on Sunday at his home in New Jersey. The cause of death is unknown.
Breedlove, who also went by the stage names Ox and Lotto, was best known for his role in the 2002 film starring Eminem, in which he portrayed one of the main antagonists of the protagonist Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith, played by Eminem. In the climactic scene of the movie, Breedlove and Eminem engaged in a fierce rap battle at a local venue called The Shelter, where Breedlove delivered some memorable lines such as “I’ll spit a racial slur, honky, sue me” and “F— Lotto, call me your leader”.
Breedlove’s mother described him as “a rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor” who was “a remarkable man whose character and strength inspired all who crossed his path”. She also expressed her grief and pain over losing her son, who was “not just my son; he was a remarkable man”.
Breedlove’s death has also drawn tributes from other figures in the hip-hop industry, such as rapper Mickey Factz, who posted a video of the rap battle from “8 Mile” on Instagram and wrote: “RIP to one of the few emcee’s to beat Eminem… Lotto from 8 Mile. Who’s friends lovingly called him, OX. You will be missed for your tenacity and aggressiveness.”
Besides “8 Mile”, Breedlove also appeared on the soundtrack of the 2001 film “The Wash”, which starred Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. He was a longtime resident of New Jersey.
