Joey Bada$$ has been appointed as the latest artist-in-residence at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, making him one of the youngest individuals to hold this prestigious position at just 29 years old. The announcement was made on September 24, 2024, and the Brooklyn rapper, whose real name is Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, will be leading masterclasses and lectures throughout the fall semester, covering topics such as music creation, songwriting, and film and television.
In a statement, Joey expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “I’m honored and humbled to be invited to be the artist-in-residence at Clive Davis Institute at NYU. I’m excited to share my experience and knowledge with the students and am certain that I will learn a lot from them as well.” He emphasized his commitment to fostering community across various sectors as part of his journey.
Nicholas Sansano, chair of the Clive Davis Institute, shared his enthusiasm for hosting Joey, highlighting the challenges faced by creatives in the current music industry. He noted that Joey’s multifaceted career as a performer, songwriter, actor, and social advocate positions him uniquely to convey important messages about sustainability in creative professions. Sansano also praised Joey’s dedication to mentorship and holistic wellness for emerging professionals.
Musically, Joey recently released “TELL ME” featuring Chlöe Bailey on September 13. This track is part of a series of collaborations he has engaged in this year, including works with IDK and Conway the Machine. Although he has not released a full album since 2022’s 2000, he has remained active in acting, notably portraying Unique in “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” where his character met an unfortunate end in season three. Additionally, he is involved in ImpactMENtorship, a program aimed at supporting men of color in the entertainment industry.
