Saweetie recently appeared on Lil Yachty’s “A Safe Place” podcast, where she opened up about her extensive family tree and connections to various celebrities and public figures[1]. The rapper touched on several well-known relatives, such as Gabrielle Union being her father’s cousin and former NFL player Willie Harper being her grandfather.
However, Saweetie also revealed lesser-known facts about her family ties. She explained that her uncles grew up in the same church as producer Zaytoven and his family, becoming family through the church[1]. Additionally, her father was a bodyguard for MC Hammer, whose family joined Saweetie’s grandmother’s church.
Despite her impressive family connections, Saweetie emphasized that her success is entirely due to her own hard work and talent. She mentioned that many of her relatives were unaware of her musical pursuits until her hit songs like “ICY GRL” and “My Type” started gaining popularity. Saweetie stated, “They had [come] up to me like, ‘Why didn’t you tell me you was doing music? If you need me, I’m here.’ So, no, [they didn’t help me]. I’ve always been really self-sufficient, but I know the help is there if I need it.”
Saweetie’s remarks come after a viral incident where someone on Twitter accused her of being a “nepo baby”. The rapper swiftly dismissed these claims, stating, “It spits in the face of the child who grew up barely spending time with her parents because they [were] too busy hustlin’ trying to make ends meet.”
On the music front, Saweetie recently released her single “NANi” in May 2024. She also dropped other tracks earlier this year, including “Richtivities” and “Khutti”.
