The recent trend in reggaeton and Latin culture in North America has taken the music industry by storm. From aspirations of J Balvin, Shakira and Daddy Yankee, to the recent growth of mainstream latin music to the breath-taking Super Bowl performances by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez shows an upwardgrowth in the love and passion for this genre of music. One can say, Latin culture is here to stay and the rise of latin music is on the forefront. One of those artists is Robert Santos, professionally known as Altur Santos.
Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, the 26-year-old singer, saxophone player, and song-writer has released his debut single Baby Love. A romantic song that encompasses passion, childhood love and the ability to love through the years. We sat down for a free-wheeling chat with this talented, upcoming music star.
We love the debut single Baby Love. What inspired this song?
“ It was about a girl that I was in love with since high school, I ended up moving to a different and we lost touch, but I still remember being young and having that genuine love that many know what I am talking about, the first crush. “
How did you get into music?
“my mom, she’s my life, my mom used to play trumpet and I used to watch her since I was young. I always wanted to follow her footsteps and the age of 17, I started producing reggaeton music in my bedroom, after I made my first song I was in love with Music at that moment. At the moment I said I want to be an Artist. My mom passed away when I was 20 years old and music was something that was special to her so I began really taking it seriously with the saxophone and singing.”
It seems like you had an early start in music with playing the saxophone can you tell us a little bit about that?
“Yeah, 11 years old I started playing trumpet, because I wanted to follow my mom, but the connection with the instrument wasn’t there, I tried saxophone 3 months later and the connection I had with that instrument was something special. I had my first party at 14 years old they booked me to play the saxophone, I couldn’t believe I was making money with something I love. My first party was with my teacher and he paid me my first 6000 pesos it was December 24th I still won’t forget it”.
Seeing there is craze for latin music in North-America today, where would you want to see your music played the most?
“Defiantly in my country of Dominican Republic, and all of Latin America”
Seeing that your are a not signed artist and independent, what label do you see yourself working with?
“ We I started
making music I had a dream of signing with Carbon Fibre Music because it was a company
from Puerto Rico owned by Farruko one of the biggest artist at the moment, then
after a several years Rich Music came out and it has been my Dream Company to
work with”
Is there a future collaboration you have in mind?
“ Yes, I would I would love to collaborate with one of my favourite artists that have inspired me throughout all these years of making music, Justin Quiles. I love his musical style and his voice is just something else. Also, I would love to make music with Ozuna, Farruko, Maluma, Sech and other Puerto rican artists, has been my dream for a very long time”
What advice do you have for any other Reggaeton artists looking to make music?
“ To Follow their dream and not give up, no matter how hard it gets, if music is what you really love, do it, cuz tomorrow you will regret not doing it.”
