This season of Power Book IV: Force has been piling on the stakes to the point where it seems like a tall Jenga tower that is leaning from side to side and is certain to come toppling over. Episode 4 “The Devil is in the Details” stacked even more blocks atop this wobbly pile of wooden blocks.
It could be argued that no one has seen their standing in the criminal food chain threatened to the degree Jenard has and that trend continued in this episode. If there is any silver lining at all in the dark clouds amassing over his head, it would be the fact that the forces mounting against Jenard are doing so right in front of his face. Not so for Walter Flynn, who has a world of troubles just outside his view, waiting to take him down in the most painful way possible. Walter did himself no favors in this episode, pouring gasoline on the kindling so it will burn that much faster once ignited.
There was also a shocking moment at the end of this installment that will almost definitely change the trajectory of one character permanently. Not only that, but the worlds of Tommy and Diamond are going to become infinitely more complicated as a result. The specter of the law continues to mount in this episode as well – although still in the background of the main storyline, once this aspect gets unleashed, the streets of Chicago will become an even more dangerous place to be for Tommy and crew.
Like its preceding offerings, this episode kept the action moving while also giving space for some deeper connection between some of the characters. The acting remains top-notch across the board, drawing the viewer in and making it almost impossible to wait for the next chapter in this bloody tale.
Power Book IV: Force Season 2 is streaming on the Starz Network.
When not spending time with his wife and two boys, Michael is either writing, reading, or cooking badly. After college, he moved to New York City to break into acting, then back to Virginia to attend professional wrestling school until a couple close calls in the ring sidelined those dreams. That’s when the writing bug bit and bit hard.
