Clipse Honors Late Parents with Heartfelt “The Birds Don’t Sing” Performance

Hip-hop duo Clipse made a powerful return to live television on Tuesday night (July 15), offering a deeply moving performance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” Instead of revisiting their signature cocaine-rap anthems, Pusha T and Malice used the national stage to pay tribute to their late parents, performing “The Birds Don’t Sing” from their new album, Let God Sort Em Out.

The heartfelt rendition showcased vulnerable new lyrics and raw emotion, with childhood photos and family memories playing in the background. Pusha T opened the track by reflecting on his final conversation with their mother, Mildred Thornton, rapping: “Lost in emotion, mama’s youngest / Trynna navigate life without my compass / Some experience death and feel numbness / But not me, I felt it all and couldn’t function.”

In a departure from the studio version featuring John Legend, a female vocalist handled the chorus. Malice followed with an equally touching verse dedicated to their father, Gene Elliott Thornton, who passed away just four months after their mother.

The stirring tribute resonated deeply with viewers, garnering emotional reactions online. “Eyes get watery each time I hear this. So powerful,” one fan commented. Another remarked, “They could have performed one of their hit singles like ‘Ace Trumpets’ or ‘So Be It,’ but they chose to honor their parents. Clipse is something special.”

Let God Sort Em Out marks Clipse’s first full-length project in over 15 years and features production exclusively by Pharrell Williams. The album also boasts guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, The Creator, The-Dream, Stove God Cooks, and Nas.

Clipse is set to continue their comeback with a performance at the 2025 ESPY Awards on Wednesday (July 16), followed by the U.S. leg of their “Let God Sort Em Out Tour” in August, supported by EARTHGANG. The group will head to Europe for additional tour dates in November.
