The murder case of Tupac Shakur, the legendary rapper who was shot and killed in Las Vegas in 1996, has taken a new turn as a witness has identified the shooter and claimed that it was not Orlando Anderson, the main suspect in the case.
According to a report, the witness is an affiliate of the South Side Compton Crips, the gang that was allegedly involved in the shooting. The witness testified in front of a Las Vegas grand jury that the shooter was Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who was sitting in the backseat of a white Cadillac along with Anderson and two other men, Duane “Keefe D” Davis and Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown.
The witness said that Davis, who is Anderson’s uncle and a former gang leader, handed the gun to Anderson, but he did not have a clear shot because Smith was too big and blocked his view. Smith then grabbed the gun and fired at Shakur’s BMW, which was stopped at a red light on Flamingo Road.
The witness also accused Davis of ordering the hit on Shakur as an act of revenge for an earlier altercation at the MGM Grand hotel, where Shakur and his entourage had attacked Anderson after a Mike Tyson fight. The witness said that Davis was the one who made all the arrangements and plans until the gun went into someone else’s hands.
Davis, who has confessed to his role in the shooting in various interviews and documentaries, as well as his 2019 book Compton Street Legend, was arrested last week and charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang. He is scheduled to be arraigned on October 4.
Anderson, who had denied any involvement in Shakur’s murder to CNN before his death in a gang-related shooting in 1998, has long been considered the prime suspect in the case. However, no one has ever been convicted for the crime, which has sparked numerous conspiracy theories and speculation over the years.
Shakur, who was 25 years old when he died, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and best-selling rap artists of all time. He has sold over 75 million records worldwide and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His family and fans have been waiting for justice for 27 years.
