African music, ranging from Afrobeats to Afro-pop, is undergoing a global resurgence, particularly in the United States, with artists like Wizkid, Davido, Ayra Starr, and Tiwa Savage at the forefront. Tems, in particular, has played a significant role in this revival. In a recent interview with NPR on March 28, the “Water” singer discussed the increasing attention African artists are receiving globally, emphasizing the genuine interest in their music and culture beyond passing trends. Tems highlighted the shift towards African artists leading the music scene.
Tyla, a Grammy Award winner, credited Tems as an inspiration for infusing pop and R&B melodies with beats that honor their cultural heritage. She praised Tems for setting an example for their generation and opening doors for other artists. Tyla even postponed her album release to collaborate with Tems on the track “No.1,” released on March 22 alongside the rest of the album.
TYLA’s album featured collaborations with Gunna, Skillibeng, Kelvin Momo, Becky G, and a remix of her hit “Water” with Travis Scott. Tracks like “ART,” “Truth or Dare,” and “On My Body” resonated well with fans. Tems, set to release her debut album later this year, has also made waves in the U.S. music scene, contributing to songs like Beyoncé’s “MOVE” and Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up.” Additionally, Future’s track “WAIT FOR U,” featuring Drake, sampled Tems’ 2020 song “Higher,” showcasing her influence and reach in the industry.
