Justin “Straight Drop” Johnson was sentenced to life in prison on September 26 for the murder of rapper Young Dolph. Johnson was found guilty on multiple charges, including first-degree murder and possession of a firearm as a felon, nearly three years after Dolph was fatally shot at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in Memphis.
In response to the verdict, Young Dolph’s wife, Mia Jaye, expressed her relief on Instagram, stating that the decision restored her faith in the justice system. She thanked law enforcement and the prosecution for their efforts but noted that the journey to this conviction was “incredibly frustrating.” Jaye emphasized her commitment to fighting for justice not only for Dolph but for all Black men.
On September 23, co-defendant Cornelius Smith testified against Johnson after pleading guilty to murder charges. Smith implicated Johnson and others in a conspiracy related to Dolph’s killing, which stemmed from a feud between rival record labels. The prosecution presented substantial evidence, including video footage and phone calls linking Johnson to the crime.
Johnson did not testify in his defense. Prosecutor Paul Hagerman highlighted a FaceTime call between Johnson and another alleged conspirator, suggesting a $100,000 hit was placed on Dolph’s life. Following the verdict, Dolph’s sister, Carlissa Thornton, urged people to remember her brother as someone who uplifted others and inspired those from challenging backgrounds, vowing to keep his legacy alive.
