DJ Khaled is not only a hitmaker in music but also sneakers. The producer and rapper has revealed that his Air Jordan 5 “We The Best” collection, which dropped in 2022, was the biggest-selling collaboration in Air Jordan history.
In a new Sneaker Shopping with Complex episode, DJ Khaled talked about his partnership with Snipes, the massive sneaker collection, and the upcoming Air Jordan project. He also claimed that his previous Air Jordan 5 collab, which featured six pastel colorways, broke records for the brand.
“The We The Best 5s, the Jordan 5s, was the biggest release number-wise in Jordan-collaboration history,” he said. “Do your research and get to it ASAP. We’re talking numbers. Because when I put these out and the coconuts, I wanted to ensure we did a worldwide thing.”
DJ Khaled’s statement was backed up by Reggie Saunders, the vice president of entertainment marketing at Jordan Brand, who confirmed it at a press conference in February 2022. “This is the largest launch of any collaborator we’ve ever worked with,” Saunders said.
The Air Jordan 5 “We The Best” collection was released on Cyber Monday in 2022, retailing for $225. The sneakers were part of a larger “We The Best” collection, including apparel and accessories. DJ Khaled first teased the collaboration in April 2022 on Instagram, showing off three other colorways exclusive to family and friends.
DJ Khaled also got a cosign from Kanye West, who praised the sneakers when he saw them earlier this year. The legendary Jadakiss was also tapped to help promote the collab with a rap commercial that aired before the release.
DJ Khaled is not done with Air Jordan yet, as he hinted at another collaboration in the works. He said he is talking to Michael Jordan himself about it and trying to figure out when to do it. “I’m talking to Michael Jordan right now,” he said. “We’re just trying to figure out when we want to do it.”
