Exclusive Interview with Slayer Tha G

Today we had an exclusive chance to interview Slayer Tha G:

What is your legal name and age?
Thank you for your time. My birth name is Edward Holman Jr. I recently changed it to Zidan Barraq. Zidan means growth and progress. Barraq means brilliant and radiant. I wonted to embody these names. I want to shine and grow in anything I do. Never failing but progressing. If I only were to move an inch, I have progressed.

How did you come up with a stage name?
I am a fan of the group called rock group slayer. There whole energy lit. They inspired me to take on the name Slayer. I’m just not a hip-hop fan. I love all types of music with passion. Now The letter G is sacred. It stands for both the great architect of the universe and geometry. I wonted a name that represents rays of light. A force unseen but felt. That is all I can say about that. Lol Stay G everything you do.

Where and how do you work best?
Great question. I work best alone. I believe I get my best music and lyrics when its me myself and I. When I am alone, I become more creative. A force comes over me then the magic happens. I become In tune with the gift and then the alter ego kicks in. wherever the music leads me that is the type of song you will hear. One hundred.

Talk me through your creative process.
My creative process starts with first hearing the music. I meditate on the beat. Becoming one with the beat. After I get a feel of the music then I write a chorus to the flow of the beat. Once the chorus is created now its time to write the lyrics. Something I learned as an artist music is like riding a bike. Let it flow.

Have you heard the theory that some musicians write their best music while they’re depressed or going through a bad time?
Yes, I have. I am a firm believer of that saying. Some of the best songs from rap to rock and rand b was written from pain. For example, Ojays “money money” or Temptations “Papa was rolling Stone” to Diddy “Last night represents pain. May hits yesterday and today came from the depth of pain. I try to channel my music creativity through pain and experience. Expressing that pain through song on paper releases it.

Where are you now?
I am currently in the St. Louis Mo area. I was born and raise here. We are considered Midwest. The show me state. Lol. I do plan on relocating when the time is right.

What’s the best advice you ever received?
The best advice I received recently was from the Ice t. Not personally but I really took that advice to heart. He said quote “Don’t worry about who likes you. It does not matter. F with the people that F with you. I already knew this but sometimes things you need to hear gain be right on time. You can’t make people like you. You can’t make people love you. People fear what they do not understand. They didn’t understand Jesus now he’s one of the most talked about person in history.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?
My music comes from being a product of the slums, the struggle, life experiences. This is how I put words on paper as a songwriter. However, I may be feeling that moment then that’s how I’ll write. It could be a club banger, a song that brings awareness or something for the streets. This is what makes you a true artist. Channeling the direction, the music takes you.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
When I was 14 years old my friends and I decided to steal some cars. Now I did not know how to hot wire a car. My friends knew how to. Well, that 1 car turned to 7 cars. Joyriding. Crazy right? So, we drove to the southside of St. Louis. We pulled on the Meineke lot to steal another car. Well, somebody was watching. I do not know if it was surveillance but 5min later we hear the sirens and see the police behind us. It looked like it was the whole city of St. Louis police. Well, they the chased us down to this vacant lot.

We get out start running. My little brother and 5 of my friends got away. Found out later they hid in the city’s garbage can. Lol. I got caught and 2 of my friends. I end up going to juvenile. I knew then to keep my mouth shut. From my O. Gs to just growing up in the hood, I learned never talk to police and never snitch. I remember the police coming to my cell with my brother inhaler in his hand. They knew it was my brother because of the last name. I told the police I don’t know him. At 14 I knew secrecy and code of honor where important traits to have. Man, memory lane. I remember that police chased me down and tripped me to the ground. All these police standing around me. One cop looked at me grabbed my face and hit me with his knuckle on side of my face. I was just 14years old! This was my first experience and many more with the system. Life is about growth. We were just young and stupid Then. Lol. We would not do that now being much older. We buy cars now and work hard for what we won’t. I have grown since 14 and now focus on my family and career.

What are you focusing your time on now?

What do you want your legacy to be? How do you want to be remembered?
I want my legacy to be a person who wonted to make people feel good. I helped them get through the day. I help them coped with things we go through in life as humans. I want to be remembered as a humanitarian who was just not about the music but about the issues of urban community. Who was passionate for the betterment of the poor? A person who brought different races together while sparking their brains. If I can spark one brain, then I did my job. This is how I want to be remembered.
