On Friday, August 30th, Big Sean released his eagerly awaited sixth studio album “Better Me Than You”. The 21-track effort opens with “Pressure (Intro)”, where various voices urge Sean to return to the music scene, noting his absence from his hometown of Detroit. The Detroit native responds confidently on the next track “Iconic”, stating he’s “back to the basics, back to the work”.
Some standout cuts from the project include:
- “It Is What It Is” featuring Gunna
- “This N That” featuring Bryson Tiller and Kodak Black
- “Who You Are (Superstar)”
- “Break The Cycle” featuring Charlie Wilson
Additional guest appearances come from Eryn Allen Kane, Cash Cobain, Syd, NASAAN, Teyana Taylor, Larry June, Thundercat, and DJ Premier. Production is handled by frequent collaborators like Teddy Walton and Hit-Boy, as well as BNYX, WondaGurl, and KAYTRANADA.

In an interview with Apple Music, Sean explained the album’s release was inspired by having fun and the events unfolding in his life, stating “I’m at a point in my life where I just let things happen when they’re supposed to happen, so I just felt like it was time.”[1] He added, “It’s not that I’m trying to prove myself. I’m really trying to improve myself. What is really important to me is the progression of myself and passing that on to my family, and to my audience, or to whoever I can.”
“Better Me Than You” serves as the follow-up to Sean’s 2020 album “Detroit 2”, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and spent 12 weeks on the chart.
