J. Cole has finally addressed the rumours of a beef with NBA YoungBoy, who dissed him earlier this year for allegedly snubbing him on a collaboration.
The Dreamville rapper cleared the air on his guest verse on Drake’s new album For All the Dogs, which dropped on Friday, October 6.
On the song “First Person Shooter,” Cole raps: “N-ggas so thirsty to put me in beef/ Dissectin’ my words and start lookin’ too deep/ I look at the tweets and start suckin’ my teeth/ I’m lettin’ it rock ’cause I love the mystique/ I still want to get me a song with YB/ Can’t trust everything that you saw on IG/ Just know if I diss you, I made sure you know that I hit you like I’m on your caller ID.”
Cole’s verse suggests that there is no bad blood between him and the Baton Rouge rapper, and he hopes to work with him in the future. He also implies that the media and the fans have blown the situation out of proportion and that he would never subliminally diss anyone.
The alleged beef between Cole and YoungBoy started in May
It started when NBA Youungbuy released a song called “Fuck the Industry Pt. 2”, where he shot Drake, J. Prince, and Cole. He accused Cole of playing him cold and ignoring his request for a feature while collaborating with his rival Lil Durk instead.
“J a ho, that n-gga played it cold like he was gon’ do a feature/ So I texted his line, a muscle sign, I swear it’s gon’ be nice to meet you,” YoungBoy rapped.
According to Akademiks, Cole and YoungBoy had planned to hit the studio together in March, but YoungBoy never showed up, leaving Cole waiting for eight hours. YoungBoy reportedly said his energy was not fit to be in the studio with Cole then.
Cole’s manager, Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad, denied that Cole ever responded to YoungBoy’s diss on another song, “The Secret Recipe, ” featuring Lil Yachty. He said on social media: “I’m pretty sure this is [cap emoji]. Not sure how y’all heard that cole verse and put that together, impressive [crying face emoji].”
Cole also weighed in on the ongoing debate about the best rapper among him, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake on “First Person Shooter”. He rapped: “Love when they argue the hardest, MC, is it K-Dot, is it Aubrey or me?/ We the big three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammed Ali.”
